Boris Vian hand dated his manuscript the afternoon of his 26th birthday, 10 March 1946. Employed at the time as an engineer for ANFOR (l’Association Française de Normalisation) Vian used his office desk as a scriptorium, its drawer as a foot rest, and the association's business paper as a canvas. Each page of the manuscript is double-sided: the draft for the novel on one side and work from his day-job on the other.

Vian’s preparatory notes are included in the back matter of this deluxe edition. These notes offer the reader exclusive access into Boris Vian’s remarkable literary universe.
